Haven, one of Bohemians' chosen charities, is seeking volunteers to build houses for some of the poorest people in the world. Haven has been building houses and sustainable communities in Haiti, while also providing emergency relief in the wake of the January 2010 earthquake. Haven is bringing two groups of 300 people to Haiti on a ‘Build it Week’, the first running from 23rd October to 31st October and the second from 30th October to 7th November. Volunteers will live in a tented camp and work alongside Haven’s Haitian workforce to build homes for those living without the basic human right of adequate shelter. Nearly half of all those who have taken part in a previous Build it Week have committed to travel on a future trip but places are still available for new recruits. “Without a full team of volunteers we will not be able to reach our building target. We are appealing for men and women from all walks of life to get ‘stuck in’ with us in Haiti at the end of October, and make this trip a success,” said Louise Glennon, Communications Officer at Haven. Volunteers must raise a minimum of €4,500 to take part in the trip. This will cover all expenses including flights, food, accommodation, insurance; the remainder will be donated directly to the building project. Haven was set up by Irish businessman Leslie Buckley in January 2009. |
