The Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Emer Costello, hosted a reception for Bohemian FC on February 17, 2010, to honour the club’s achievements during its 120-year history. Players, coaches, directors and staff of Bohemian FC were present in Dublin’s Mansion House to hear the Lord Mayor commend the club’s contributions to the life of the capital city, which this year has been designated the European Capital of Sport. Cllr Costello presented to club president Robert Dunne a mayoral citation which congratulates the club on its 120th anniversary this year, honours Bohemians as champions of the League of Ireland in two consecutive seasons, and salutes the club for its role in the sporting life of the city. Responding, Robert Dunne outlined the many ways in which Bohemians is an integral part of Dublin. These include providing sporting entertainment for thousands of people, employing playing, coaching and administrative staff, buying services and products from local suppliers, encouraging children into sport through the club’s youth teams and senior players’ many visits to schools and communities, and supporting local charities. Larry O’Toole, a member of Dublin City Council and a long-time Bohemians supporter, praised the team not just for winning the league in 2009 but also for the manner in which they won it. He recalled the away match against Red Bull Salzburg and the recovery after defeat to Shamrock Rovers in Tallaght as highlights of the season, and he looked forward to a third consecutive league win. League of Ireland director Fran Gavin congratulated Bohemians representatives on the special honour accorded to the club. The Bohemians party was entertained by ballad group, Finnegan’s Rake, and enjoyed a buffet dinner. Cllr O’Toole and Joe Costello TD later received shirts signed by the players to acknowledge their support of the club.
