Donal Crowther Tribute E-mail

@bfcdublin Honorary Secretary of the Bohemian Football Club from 1986 to 1998, Donal -- who died on 24th January 2012 -- was the longest-serving Hon. Sec. in the club’s history, a feat he was rightly proud of.

He also served as Executive Secretary to the League of Ireland itself for five years, before retiring in 2002.

Throughout his remarkable service for Bohemians and the League he only seemed to make friends, not enemies.

That might seem an exaggeration, for being a football secretary at any level can frequently see you in the firing line, but really it was close to impossible to fall out with Donal as he was one of nature’s gentlemen.

The secret to his success wasn't a secret at all, it was just the same genuine courtesy to anyone he met.

Yet he would always get his point across if it needed making, and he could actually even tell you off on occasion -- even then you'd part on the best of terms, usually smiling!

Donal was honoured by Bohemians as a Life Vice-President in 2004 and he continued to act as one of the club’s best ambassadors wherever he went -- just by being himself.

He remained a stalwart Gypsy despite bouts of ill health during his latter years, and last season as usual he was a regular at Dalymount Park, often dropping in for an ‘update’, never leaving you without an uplifting word, sentiment or smile even on the gloomiest days.

A member since September 1971, he loved the Bohemian Football Club and we will sorely miss our knowledgeable, gentle, genial friend.

Our sincere and deepest sympathy to Donal’s wife, Katie, family and friends.
