Bohs women into WFAI Junior Cup Final E-mail

The Bohs women's team has qualified for the final of the WFAI Junior Cup with a 4-2 on penalties after a 2-2 draw against Kilmore LFC in Mayo. Report by Shaun Kidd

With a round trip of 660kms, the team left Dublin just before 9:00  and reached Kilmore in Mayo at 1:45. A crowd of 700, the biggest crowd that Bohs had played in front of, turned up to watch this match.

Bohs started well and had a chance nearly from the kick-off after a cross from Molly carpenter was touched goalwards by a Kilmore player and the keeper needed two chances to keep hold of the ball.

Bohs came close a few minutes later after a Rachel McLoughlin free-kick went just wide of the left-hand post. Bohs had a couple more chances to score but, due to good defendind and some good saves from the home keeper, the score stayed at 0-0.

Ten minutes before half-time is was 1-0 to Bohs. Following a Stacey Nesbitt corner, the ball was cleared back out towards the same player, who hit the ball first time sending it over the keepers head and into the far corner.

After the break Bohs started strongly and could have had a couple  more goals with free-kicks from Rachel McLoughlin and Stacey Nesbitt both whizzing past the posts.

The second goal from Bohs came on 75 minutes. Rachel McLoughlin seized on a loose ball 30 yards from goal and played a one-two with Sinead O'Kelly, then chipped the Kilmore keeper from 20 yards.

To the home team's credit, they never gave up and within three minutes had a goal. A ball played through from midfield was touched on to an on-running Kilmore player who shot past Carol Hanna before she could close her down.

In what could have been a disaster for Bohs, the home side equalised with two minutes to go. Bohs were looking tired and the home side took their chance from a cross which was touched home by the centre-forward to send the home crowd wild.

The match went into extra-time and with both sides getting tired chances were limited. Bohs' chance came in the first half when Stacey Nesbitt latched onto a through ball and just as she shot the center-back for Kilmore got back to block.

In the second half, Kilmore forced a corner and their tall centre forward climbed highest to head the ball goalwards, but substitute Rachel Dooley dived back to head the ball onto the crossbar and the Bohs defence cleared.

A minute later the referee blew for full-time and we had our second penalty shootout of the season.

Up first were the home team and Carol Hanna did superbly well to save. Molly Carpenter then scored, followed by the home team. Amie Sinclair was next up and cooly slotted the ball into the corner.

Kilmore made it 2-2 with their next penalty before Sinead O'Kelly put Bohs back in front. Then the Kilmore number five hit the crossbar with their fourth penalty. It was then left to Stacey Nesbitt to put Bohs in their first ever WFAI cup final which she did with a well-struck shot into the corner.

A memorable day for the Bohs womens' team. A big thanks to our gracious hosts at the Kilmore Community Sports Field for their hospitality before and after the match and making sure that the womens' team were well looked after.
