| Plaudits Flood In For Powell |

Conor Powell scored his first goal for Bohemians in the 4-0 victory over Drogheda United and gave a timely reminder of just how well he has played this season. Whether he meant it or not, The Gypsies left-back still produced a delightful chip to net the third goal in a game that got Pat Fenlon’s team back to winning ways in the league. After storming forward down the left flank – a regular sight at Dalymount Park this year – Powell looked up before launching the ball over goalkeeper the hapless Steve Williams and into the back of the net.
With the stadium announcer reminding everyone that it was his debut goal for the club, his team-mates rushed over to congratulate him while the home crowd also voiced their appreciation.
It may have taken some time for the 21-year-old to break his duct, but he has become such a notable regular in the starting eleven that supporters would be forgiven for thinking that he already had a few goals under his belt. Rated highly by his peers and the country’s leading football writers, Powell is someone who is expected to go on to forge a successful career. Whether that means moving abroad to England or morphing into a dominant force on the League of Ireland scene, he is sure to get even better.
Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni is rumored to have been impressed by the rampaging left-back during the home win over Galway United, while scouts and managers of several big name clubs have also turned up to watch him in action.
It says a lot about his character that the Dubliner has not been fazed by the attention. For example, in the Uefa Champions League qualifier against Red Bull Salzburg he was one of the best players in the return leg despite playing against seasoned internationals.
After playing a key role in last season’s double-winning campaign for Bohs, he will be desperate to help the club finish this season with more silverware. Whatever the outcome for the Phibsboro outfit though, he is destined to be involved in many more games where his talent will be on show. |
